Boreal is now part of the SilverCreek SNMP Test Suite!
InterWorking Labs introduced Boreal, the SNMP Vulnerabilities Test Suite in July 2002. While the SilverCreek SNMP Test Suite had test coverage for SNMP vulnerabilities, the extensive publicity surrounding this particular type of failure -- problems in the packet encapsulation -- created demand from SNMP implementors for 100% test coverage of SNMP vulnerabilities.
Generally, 100% test coverage is not desirable; it introduces costs and complexities that do not have a positive return on investment. The preferred testing is to sample the areas that implementors are known to get wrong and focus the testing on these areas. Generally if a device fails the tests from the particular area, in this case vulnerabilities introduced by incorrect packet encapsulation, then the developer can go through this section of the code and find and correct all the problems.
Boreal evolved to become one of the many test suites comprising the SilverCreek SNMP Test Suite and is now referred to as the SilverCreek SNMP Vulnerability Test Suite. The SilverCreek Vulnerability Test Suite tests the robustness of an SNMP agent in the face of a Denial-of-Service attack.
